Quick Start

  1. Get an API key — Sign up at dashboard.cohere.com; a free trial key is available with generous rate limits for experimentation.
  2. Install the SDK — Run pip install cohere (Python) or npm install cohere-ai (Node.js).
  3. Send your first chat request — Instantiate cohere.Client(api_key) and call co.chat(model='command-r-plus', message='...').
  4. Add documents for RAG — Pass a documents list to the chat call; Command R+ will ground its response and return citations automatically.
  5. Enable tool use — Define tools as JSON schemas in the tools parameter; the model will emit structured tool-call responses you can execute and feed back.
